What is Seasonal Wine?

In its simplest definition, seasonal wines are wines you typically drink only at certain times of the year. It would be unusual to suggest drinking hot wine in summer!

What defines when to drink such a wine? Often, it’s the tones or spices in the wine and the type of wood it’s been aged in. For example, oak-aged red and white wines with notes of cinnamon or vanilla can be evocative of autumn.

Of course, the most well-known and most popular seasonal wine is mulled wine.

Mulled Wine – the Drink of Christmas

Mulled wine is the perfect winter-warming drink for the festive period. Traditionally served hot, it is known for being one of the most popular beverages in winter, featured at Christmas markets and seasonal parties. Mulled wine is often a blend of red wines infused with a selection of fruits and spices.

The most common spices are cloves, star anise, cardamom, black peppercorns, cinnamon and dried orange peel. These were originally added to wine by the Romans who believed they added healing properties to each glass.
